At a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy on 25 August, President Alar Karis reaffirmed Estonia’s commitment to both supporting and rebuilding Ukraine.
“Estonia is unwavering in its support for the Ukrainian state and Ukrainian society,” he remarked. “We are committed to restoring what has been destroyed and to creating something new, across the board, in all areas.”
The head of state added that Estonia backed the country’s rapid accession to the EU. “This will strengthen both Ukraine and the European Union,” he said. “The same applies in regard to you joining NATO.”
However, President Karis noted that in the meantime, everything must be done to put an end to Russia’s attacks on peaceful towns and people. “Estonia is working alongside its partners to ensure that Ukraine receives anti-aircraft missiles as a matter of urgency,” he explained.
President Karis and Sirje Karis are on an official visit to Ukraine. On 24 August, the presidential couple took part in events marking 35 years of Ukrainian independence alongside President Alexander Stubb of Finland, President Gitanas Nausėda of Lithuania and President of the European Council António Costa.
Sirje Karis also attended the Sixth Summit of First Ladies and Gentlemen held under the aegis of First Lady of Ukraine Olena Zelenska, which focused on maintaining stability in uncertain times.
